Excerpt taken from Greenspaced Blog: “With the financial support of Virgin Holidays, The Travel Foundation the Sandals Foundation and Bluefields Bay Villas, the Bluefields Bay Fishermen’s Friendly Society has been able to manufacture marker-buoys which will clearly demarcate this 3,000-hectare reserve. Patrol

The Bluefields Environmental Protection Association and Bluefields Bay Villas would like to congratulate local efforts that led to Bluefields Bay being declared an aquatic wildlife sanctuary in 2011. It is now illegal to fish in the majority of the Bay. Virgin Vacations and the Travel Foundation paid for buoys to be put out into the water delineating the portion of the Bay that is protected, while BEPA and Bluefields Bay Villas pay for the gas used by the patrol boat that ensures that residents abide by the law and fish in deeper waters.
